Florida kids to see swearing-in of Liberian president, grandma

DELAND, Fla.
Liberian president-elect Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf has been called the "Iron Lady," someone who fearlessly challenged the most powerful Liberian warlord.

Two Florida children have another name for her: grandma.

Jamell Sirleaf, 9, and Amina Sirleaf, 7, will be part of a group of dignitaries in Liberia on Monday for the swearing-in of their grandmother, Africa's first female head of government.

The two will be at the ceremony in Monrovia, Liberia's capital, joining dignitaries such as first lady Laura Bush and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. They will be accompanied by their mother, Helen Joseph, who fled from Liberia at the age of about 13. The children's father is James Sirleaf, Johnson-Sirleaf's son. Joseph and Sirleaf are divorced, but their grandmother remains close.

And grandma, well, she wanted Jamell and Amina at the historic event.

"Ellen called me and insisted that I take the children," Helen Joseph told the Orlando Sentinel.

Despite her memories of war-torn Liberia, a country of curfews and shootings, Joseph agreed. She said until now she has been afraid to take the children to the country.

Liberia was founded by freed American slaves in 1847. The country has been torn by bloody coups and war since 1980. Around 200,000 people have died in the fighting, and millions have been displaced.

The president-elect will take over a a war-scarred nation where a stunning 80 percent of the working population is jobless. The Harvard-educated economist is a former Liberian finance minister. She has also served with the World Bank and the United Nations. She won the presidency in a November run-off election.

Jamell, meanwhile, had one question about the trip.

"If we're the president's grandkids, why aren't we flying to Liberia in a private jet?" Jamell said.
